TEACHING READING Learn Letter and Sound System
To produce efficient readers the following reading skills have to be taught:
Understanding that spoken words are made up of separate sounds and that printed letter symbols represent these sounds, that reading means deciphering these letter symbols into their corresponding speech sounds and blending them to form a word.
“Teaching Reading” promotes early reading success, focusing on the development of phoneme awareness and the knowledge of letter-sound associations.
The activities teach students: to hear and identify individual sounds in words to observe how sounds are made letter recognition and letter-sound relationships that certain letters represent certain sounds how words in speech can be separated into sounds and the sounds represented by certain letters.
The instruction is systematic. The skills to belearned are taught in progression from simple to the more complex. The strategies used are based on picture-sound-letter or picture-letter-sound associations, introduced in the previous workbook, “Reading Readiness”.
