SUBTRACTION Concept of 10
This workbook has
been prepared for students who exhibit significant gaps in acquiring the
concept of number. It sets out strategies for tutors to help support students
to develop conceptual understanding of mathematics, primarily the concept of
10 and the concept of subtracting.
The
concept of subtraction seems to be more difficult to grasp than the concept
of addition. Yet most text books and workbooks combine addition and
subtraction, concentrating generally on addition using inverse operation to bridge the gap from
learning to add to learning to subtract.
It is essential
to fully understand the concept of 10, and be able to visualise the numbers
(sets) that make up 10. Some students grasp the concept easily. Some need a
range of different strategies and numerous activities to develop the
understanding and the skills to do the operations and calculations
confidently.
The activities in
Subtraction Concept of 10 relate to real life experiences, using themes and pictures the
students are familiar with and can relate the mathematical problems to.
The reproducible work
sheets make it possible to introduce, repeat and reinforce subtraction
problems and solutions in many different ways by enlarging some sections, by
blocking out some parts and highlighting others.
